Can I Deduct Rental Car Costs?

Filed under: New York City Car Rental - 18 Mar 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

When it comes to New York City you are in a city with a lot of history, tourism, and excitement. New York City hosts home to many celebrities and other well-known people. New York City has a certain charm to it that cannot be overlooked. If you are in the “Big Apple” in your car rental then you should be ready for a blast around town. You may be wondering what are the tax requirements for a rental car are.

When it comes to deducting rental car costs it really depends on many factors. Some of the variables that exist with your rental car and your taxes are things like how long you had to drive the rental car, the cost of the car, and maintenance, etc. The rules change when the employer pays for all of the expenses of the car however, if they don’t you very well may be entitled to a good deduction on your taxes. Why? Because you had to come out of pocket in order to work. So you basically had no other choice.

The most important thing that you can do to help your deduction is hang on tight to all of your receipts, and to keep a log of your mileage somewhere in a file. The tax filer will ask you for these documents and you will also have to fill out the form 3903. By having all of these things in order it will help you have a smoother tax return for your deductions. Don’t think that the deductions will be huge though, there is a standard limit that the IRS goes by.

Taking a trip to the Big Apple can be exciting for those that have never been there. There is so much to do in this city that never sleeps, planning a trip can be overwhelming. The first thing to do is narrow down the most important places for you. Everyone has different interests, so plan on going to the places you are interested in. From there, you will have to decide what is worth your time and money.

Most people in New York City take taxis to get around. While visiting New York City, car rental is an option, but you will have to be prepared for aggressive drivers. The benefit of getting a car rental is you will be able to cover a lot of ground. In New York City, there is a lot of ground to cover.

If you have a rental car, this is one less stressful thing to worry about as you squeeze in between all the yellow taxicabs that flood the streets of Manhattan.

One of the must see things to do in NYC include going to the theater. While it is ideal to go to a Broadway show, there are plenty of entertaining an affordable off-Broadway plays to see. Look for deals ahead of time or ask around.

Lastly, food options are plentiful, but two must haves are a slice of New York style pizza and a sandwich from a delicatessen.

Who’s Insurance is Responsible If I Have an Accident in a Car Rental?

Filed under: New York City Car Rental - 16 Feb 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Getting into an accident in a rental car is not an ideal situation for anyone. In fact, the situation strikes fear in many people when it happens to them. Am I going to have to pay for both cars? Will my insurance rate go up because of this accident? Of course, to make the situation even more complicated, it all depends upon a few factors. The first of these factors is whether or not it was your fault (legally) that the accident occured. You will be covered in a rental car under your insurance policy in the same way that you would if you had been driving your own car. If you are not sure about this, it is always a good idea to ask your car insurance company before driving in a rental car. Better to be safe than sorry.

There are also other factors that influence this situation. Depending on the severity of the accident, your liability in the situation may depend on the agreement that you had with your car rental company. It is important that you speak with your car rental company prior to driving their vehicle if this is something that bothers you. If your damage is small enough, the company may even let you continue driving the car until your rental period is up. In the event of an accident that renders your rental car undrivable, many companies will provide you with a second car. The chances of this happening becomes greater if you have a long history of safe driving on your record.

Use creative thinking to get cheaper flights

Filed under: New York City Car Rental - 05 Jan 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

As many of us are doubtless familiar, there’s an enormous fluctuation in the costs of airplane tickets. Depending on anything from season, how well traveled the route is, and other reasons that appear more puzzling, flight costs change consistently and radically. One of the most significant considerations if you have an interest in discount travel is the difference in cost between domestic and international flights, and to use this to your benefit when you wish to travel internationally. In the United States, a standard return flight from NY City to Montreal, Canada, as an example costs roughly $300 for a trip that’s just over one hour.

For approximately the same price, one can fly domestically across the land from Manhattan to Los Angeles – a much longer trip. With only a few exceptions, flights are less expensive domestically – that is because there are less taxes and laws for the airlines, and they’re usually on more traveled routes so that the airlines can afford a reduction. So to exploit this, and to actually get discount travel, you must look into splitting your long world flight into two flights. While it’s more indirect, and a slight inconvenience, you are able to save lots of cash this way.

As an example, if you live in the northerly US and need to go to Latin or South America, you’ll potentially find that it is a lot less expensive to first get a domestic flight to a southern hub like Miami or Dallas and then taking a second flight further south.

Even if you live in a gigantic town to the north, possibilities are the direct flight is going to be more. Taking 2 flights doesn’t need to be as inconvenient as you might imagine. Oftentimes, no overnite stay is needed, and if your final destination is a typical one you may only have a short delay. When hunting for discount travel solutions online, you are going to have to use a little bit of creative thinking. Most discount flight comparison sites aren’t set-up to search multiple flight routes to your destination. Rather, they’re built to show you the least expensive direct flight between the 2 points you would like to go.

So whenever you are comparing costs of a direct flight, it is often a brilliant idea to have a look at an indirect trail as well – often you’ll be stunned at the savings concerned. It is harder to simply compare different 2-flight routes, and the combos involved can swiftly make things complicated.

The 2 general rules to remember when attempting to find savings are that you should fly as near to your destination as feasible domestically, and then as short a possible international flight to the final destination.
